Denise wins award for cancer support work

A FORMER cancer patient has been given a top award for her support and dedication for others affected by lymphoma—the UK’s sixth most common cancer.

Denise Maguire, from Rotherham, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in January 2009, received a Special Commendation at the Lymphoma Association's annual Beacons of Hope Awards.

Denise, who is now in remission, said: “It's such an amazing honour to be given the special commendation award.

“To be nominated was mind-blowing but to win the actual category is absolutely fantastic.”

Sally Penrose, chief executive at the Lymphoma Association, said: "The Beacons of Hope Awards are our chance to recognise the efforts of our fantastic supporters.

“There were six shortlisted nominees in each of the four categories so it was extremely difficult to pick one winner.

“Denise really deserves this recognition—she is 100 per cent dedicated to supporting not only people affected by lymphoma, but also the association itself.

“She never fails to support and entertain those in our chat room and she gives invaluable advice and expertise to all who require it.”

Denise was given a certificate by Radio 4 presenter Rory Morrison, who was also diagnosed with lymphoma in 2004.

All winners were also presented with a cheque for £250 thanks to the support of the Marsh Christian Trust.
