Death of former Rotherham United forward Richard Dawson

FORMER Rotherham United forward Richard Dawson has died, aged 60.

"Dick," as he was affectionatly known, first caught the eye playing in the junior teams at the club.

He was handed his senior debut at the age of just 17 by the then manager Jim McGuigan and scored in only his third game - a 2-0 win over Oxford on January 14, 1978.

Although not able to establish himself as a regular, Richard remained at the club into the 1980/81 season when Rotherham won the old Third Division Championship under Ian Porterfield.

He left for Doncaster Rovers early in 1981 before moving on to his home-town club, Chesterfield, in August 1982.
