TAX dodgers in the Dearne Valley are being targeted as police officers launch a fortnight of random checks.

Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and the DVLA are teaming up to combat untaxed vehicles using specialist scanning software.

The technology means that any individuals with no car tax will automatically be identified which will lead to their vehicle being clamped immediately.

If the release charge is not paid, it will be towed away and could be destroyed.

Insp Alan Simpson said: "If a vehicle is untaxed it often means it has other faults such as a mechanical problem which might make it unfit to be on the road.

“If your vehicle is not roadworthy and legal then is must not be driven or parked on a public road.

“We will not tolerate tax evaders and there will be harsh and immediate penalties for those who commit this offence."
