Dearne and Don elections: Good night for Labour and Mayor to stay

THE DEARNE and Don Valleys will keep their elected Mayor after 61.7 per cent of voters backed the current system.

Doncaster was one of several council’s across the country voting on their leadership model.

And despite Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham, Coventry and Bradford saying no to an elected Mayor, the people of Doncaster stuck by their existing model and rejected a leader and cabinet system.

In the local elections, it was a positive night for Labour across the Dearne and Don Valley.

Labour’s Christine Mills, kept her seat in the Conisbrough and Denaby ward with 2,420 votes.

Phil Cole (Labour) was victorious in Edlington and Warmsworth with 1,830 votes and Tracey Leyland Jepson, (Labour), took the former Liberal Democrat seat of Mexborough with 1,577 votes.

The Conservatives kept their seat in Sprotbrough with Jonathan Wood winning 1,637 votes.

In Swinton, Ken Wyatt retained his Swinton seat along with Labour colleague Alan Gosling who keeps his seat in Wath.

In Barnsley, the Labour group increased its majority gaining nine seats; seven from the Barnsley Independent Group, one from Conservatives and one Independent in the 21 wards contested.

In Darfield, Labour’s Caroline Saunders picked up the Independent seat winning with 1,142 votes.

Labour kept its seat in Dearne North with a victory for Jennifer Margaret Worton with 1,314 votes.

In Dearne South, Labour’s Sharron Brook retained her seat winning 1,848 crosses and in Wombwell Labour’s Margaret Morgan won with 1,769 votes.
