D-Day veteran David dies at 106

A D-DAY veteran who was thought to be Britain’s oldest surviving sailor has died aged 106.

David Hughes, a retired naval commodore and active member of the Royal Naval Association, died peacefully at his home in Whiston on Monday.

Mr Hughes, president of the Mexborough branch of the RNA, was the guest of honour at the Rowms Lane Social Club as members of the Royal British Legion and RNA joined club members in celebrating the 75th anniversary of D-Day – and Mr Hughes’ 105th birthday.

Welfare liaison officer Chaz Prouten, called Mr Hughes a great character who had still painted, danced and played the harmonica despite his advanced age.
