D-Day today as Paul Warne waits on verdict from two potential new recruits for Rotherham United

ROTHERHAM United will discover today whether two of their summer targets have agreed to join them for their forthcoming Championship campaign.

Manager Paul Warne held talks with both players earlier this week and is optimistic they will have decided their futures lie at ASSEAL New York Stadium.

Speaking after yesterday's 1-1 friendly draw at Mansfield Town, he said: "I feel we're really close to two and I'll find out tomorrow."

The promoted Millers, who begin life back in the second tier at home to Swansea City in a fortnight, have been hit by a glut of injuries and a slowdown in their pre-season recruitment.

After making six signings, Warne is concerned that there have been no new arrivals in nearly a fortnight as Rotherham bid to survive in the Championship for the first time in four attempts.

"Trying to bring players in is never-ending," he said. "I have had setbacks in recruitment, I haven't intentionally dragged it out until the last two weeks before the season starts.

"We want new players in as soon as we can. We are one or two injuries away from a catastrophe."

The boss wants at least five more incomings and his priorities are a striker, a midfielder and a centre-half.

The hamstring pull suffered by young centre-forward Josh Kayode at Mansfield has exacerbated the need for more firepower to be added to the squad.

Once again, the depleted Millers had to raid their youth ranks to fill their bench against the Stags.

"Obviously we've found it difficult this off-season to recruit the players we want to recruit," Warne said. "That's been evident in the last three games.

"I don't want to be bringing on 16- and 17-year-olds in a pre-season match. I'm not knocking them. It's good for them. I thought they did really well and the game didn't get a lot worse when the young uns came on.

"However, I would prefer to replace a pro with a pro and get minutes in their legs."
