Dave steps in to help brain injury patients

A GROUP of Rotherham people with brain injuries are to get free cooking lessons from a professional chef at the town’s fire station.

Firefighters are hosting a series of classes for Headway, a charity that gives help and support to people affected by brain injury.

Eight members of the group will get 12 hours of tuition from local chef Dave Booth, learning basic cooking skills to prepare healthy nutritional meals.

The group will learn how to prepare and cook two to three meals during each lesson.

Crew manager Gary Bruce said: “We’ve successfully hosted three cooking class courses already, and so we're delighted to be able to offer the programme to members of Headway.

“The programme will give them useful cooking skills whilst at the same time helping them learn about fire safety in the kitchen.”

Vice-chairman of Headway Rotherham, Jenny Woodward, who became involved with the group after her son suffered a brain injury in a road traffic collision 11 years ago, said: “These classes will have a positive impact on our members, helping to raise their confidence and self-esteem.

“It also gives them the opportunity of friendships and camaraderie which is often difficult for sufferers of brain injuries.”
