Date announced for Rotherham by-elections after Tory resignations

BY-ELECTIONS to fill RMBC vacancies left by two departing Tory councillors will be held on December 9.

Emma McClure, Anston & Woodsetts ward, and Jack Austin, Aughton & Swallownest ward, were elected in May but quit earlier this month, citing family and work reasons.

Formal notice of the by-elections will be published next Thursday and candidates have until November 12 to submit nomination papers.

Residents have until November 23 to register to vote if not already on the electoral register. The deadline for applying to vote by proxy is 5pm on December 1.

Sharon Kemp, Rotherham Council’s chief executive and returning officer, said: “I would encourage all residents in Anston & Woodsetts ward, and Aughton & Swallownest ward to exercise their right to vote in elections.

“I would urge residents in both Anston & Woodsetts and Aughton & Swallownest wards not to leave it too late to register.

“Polling stations will be safe places to cast your ballot, but voters may consider alternatives such as postal ballots and voting by proxy. It is quick and easy to register to vote.”

The results are expected to be announced around midnight on polling day.
