"Crisis" Christmas appeal launched to help those hit hardest by pandemic

AN ANNUAL appeal to help people struggling through the winter months is up and running — with organisers said the coronavirus pandemic has made the need greater than ever.

The Food for People in Crisis Appeal used to involve asking for donations of food and toiletries using collection boxes around town but has now switched to requesting monetary help.

Organised by Food for People in Crisis (FiC) Partnership, the 2021 Christmas appeal is aimed at softening the impact of the pandemic for Rotherham’s most deprived households.

A partnership spokesperson said: “The past 18 months will go down in history as one of the most challenging periods in all of our lifetimes.

“The Covid-19 pandemic continues to bring challenges for everyone but for some people in our community this Christmas time will be particularly difficult.

“The pandemic has tipped households who were just about managing to make ends meet into facing the prospect of a really bleak time once again as incomes reduce and basic costs rise, including increased energy prices which have reached record levels around the world and which will force many people to choose between heating and eating this winter.

“Treats and festive food are a luxury some just cannot afford this year, as more and more families face difficulties providing the basics needed for survival.”

Teresa Brocklehurst, director of services at VAR, said: “Christmas is a time for giving and The Food in Crisis Christmas Appeal is an opportunity for the kind and generous people of Rotherham to come together and make a real difference to the lives of those who, particularly during this dreadful pandemic, find themselves in crisis in our community.

“Every penny donated will go to help those in particular need this festive period to bring some cheer through the provision of special parcels to top up basic supplies with those items that will make a big difference during this difficult time.”

Monetary donations can be made using the following methods: cheques made payable to: People in Need (VAR) and sent to Voluntary Action Rotherham, The Spectrum, Coke Hill, Rotherham, S60 2HX or bank transfer to People in Need (VAR), using account number  20298847 and sort code: 60-83-01.
