Crews fight 'toxic smoke' fire at industrial site in Mexborough

FIRE crews are fighting a massive blaze at an industrial site in Mexborough.

One witness reported seeing seven fire engines on nearby Wath Road and "a lot of smoke" from the scene on White Lea Road.

South Yorkshire Police advised everyone to avoid the area as there is 'toxic smoke in the air.'

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 11.39am about this incident and we currently have eight fire engines in attendance at an industrial site on Whitelee Road, Mexborough. 

“A large amount of scrap metal is involved in the fire. All surrounding businesses have been evacuated.

“We are advising people to avoid the area and close all windows and doors if you live nearby.”

Police said the whole of White Lee Road from the junction with Wath Road in Mexborough to Rowms Lane in Swinton was closed, as well as Marriott Road in Swinton.
