One crew from Birley station attended Grey Avenue at 12.05am, where the rubbish was alight on waste ground.

Staff spent about half an hour there — the fire is thought to have been set deliberately.

As other services battle wildfires in Lancashire, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is urging countryside users to help prevent accidental blazes.

Fire officers are asking those enjoying the outdoors not to light open fires in the countryside.

Barbecues should only be used in a suitable location and extinguished properly after use.

Cigarettes should be properly put out and should not be thrown on the ground.

Bottles or glass left in woodland or grassland can also start fires, as they magnify sunlight.
