Crash driver trapped in wreckage

A MAN had to be cut from his car following a collision near to a busy motorway junction.

The motorist, believed to be in his 50s, was driving his Renault Clio hatchback on the A57  near to the roundabout off junction 31 of the M1at Aston, when the incident happened at around 1pm on Sunday.

Witnesses reported that his car was involved in a collision with a Ford Transit van, leaving the van stranded in a ditch and the Clio’s front end badly damaged.

Firefighters were forced to remove the roof of the Clio to retrieve its stricken driver who was then transferred to Rotherham General Hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

Road closures remained in place until around 4pm.
