Coventry City game off as number of coronavirus cases rises at Rotherham United

There have been more positive results in the latest round of coronavirus testing and the Millers announced this evening that, after consultations with the EFL, Saturday's home clash with Coventry City has been called off

It follows the postponement of last weekend's Championship trip to Brentford and tomorrow's visit to Luton Town.

The news has left the Millers facing horrendous fixture congestion in the final few weeks of their survival run-in.

They now have the Luton and Coventry matches to rearrange but there is only one midweek slot left in the calendar before the season ends in early May.

That leaves Paul Warne's side with the prospect of at least one week where they play Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.

There are available dates in the fortnight-long international break, which starts on March 20, but opposition teams are unlikely to want to play then, having been through hectic spells themselves and preferring their players to rest.

There had been eight confirmed Covid cases among manager Warne's players and staff but that number has risen considerably.

A Rotherham statement said: "We had taken advice from the EFL to engage in a repeat round of testing after confirmed positive cases of the virus had resulted in postponements to the Brentford and Luton Town fixtures on Friday, with the latest results showing several more positive cases among the first-team players and staff.

"The club have remained in contact with medical professionals both internally and at the EFL since first learning of the outbreak.

"The latest round of test results – which were received on Monday - have revealed further positive results, despite the club closing down its training base at Roundwood last week in an attempt to control the spread of the virus.

"In keeping with Government guidelines, the first-team players and staff will now undergo a period of isolation.

"The club will continue to further investigate the outbreak, while the EFL will also carry out their own enquiries surrounding the latest postponement as is their standard protocol."
