Illegal and poorly-maintained taxis were driven off Rotherham's roads in the run-up to Christmas to protect revellers and ensure that people get home safely.

Rotherham Borough Council licences and regularly inspect taxis and private hire vehicles to ensure both the driver and the vehicle are safe for the public to use.

And earlier this month a four-hour operation by the council, South Yorkshire Police and VOSA—the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency—resulted in the inspection of 16 licensed vehicles.

Four drivers were issued with prohibition notices, one driver was suspended and his plates removed and two drivers have been reported for illegal plying offences and will be prosecuted by the local authority.

Though a minority of taxi drivers and private hire drivers were found to be flouting the law, most refused to take fares without prior bookings when approached by officers.

A council spokeswoman said that this was a very clear indication that the majority of Rotherham taxi drivers took their responsibilities seriously.

Cllr Peter Wootton, Chairman of the council's Licensing Board, said: "We take public safety very seriously and are committed to ensuring that Rotherham's taxi's offer a safe and professional service to their customers."
