Council reviewing Rotherham Show arrangements

COUNCIL chiefs vowed today that Rotherham Show will go ahead — but admitted it was “under constant review”.

Rumours spread through the town this week following the emergence of the child sexual exploitation scandal that the show could be axed amid fears it could be targeted by extremist groups.

The council’s director of environment and development services, Karl Battersby said: “The show is the biggest event in Rotherham's annual calendar, enjoyed by tens of thousands of people every year.

“Given the intense international focus on Rotherham that has grown over the past week, it is more important than ever that we focus on this hugely popular event that has been bringing Rotherham's communities together for more than 30 years.

“In the light of the events of the past week, both the council and the police will be keeping the situation under constant review in the run-up to and during this weekend.

“Given the nature and scale of the event, public safety is an important consideration for the show every year and this is simply an extension of these arrangements.

“People can be reassured that all necessary consideration is being given to the safety and security of those visiting the show, and those taking part.

“We would to thank the people of Rotherham and beyond who have consistently supported Rotherham Show year after year and we look forward to seeing them this weekend.”
