The centre-half nicknamed REG became a huge hit with supporters in a campaign where he helped the Millers win promotion from League One.

Warne says a second year at AESSEAL New York Stadium for the 23-year-old Terriers defender is “possible” but is stressing there are several hurdles to overcome and that any decision is out of his hands.

“I will definitely have a conversation with Huddersfield,” the boss said. “He’s their player and we have a really good relationship with them.

“It’s what they want for him, not what I want for him, that counts.”

Edmonds-Green’s parent club have made the Championship play-offs and are bidding to reach the top flight.

“They might end up in the Premier League next season,” Warne said. “If that’s the case, I would expect the player to want to go and have a crack at playing at that level

“If they’re in the Championship again they might not want to loan him out to a rival. They might want him in their own team.

“Even if he does become available, it won’t be until at the end of pre-season because clubs like to see their own players in training and friendlies before deciding whether to loan them out.”

The Advertiser caught up with Edmonds-Green at last week’s civic reception and asked him if coming back was in his thinking.

“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I can’t give an answer now. Never say never. Maybe I will be pulling on a Millers shirt again.

“It’s been unbelievable here. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. Everyone — the fans, the players, the staff — have made me welcome.

“I’m buzzing with how things have gone. I turned out to be a really good ‘fit’ with Rotherham.”
