Coroner speaks out over death of Radiohead technician Scott Johnson

Former Brinsworth Comprehensive student Scott Johnson (33, pictured) was working for Radiohead in Canada in June 2012 during a North American tour when part of the stage roof collapsed on him.

The Doncaster Coroner, Ms Nicola Mundy, criticised the way the stage was built at an inquest into his death at Doncaster Coroner's Court this afternoon.

The inquest was attended by Scott's father Ken Johnson, himself an expert in the scaffolding industry, and some of Scott's  fellow drummers and close friends including Radiohead's Philip Selway, Keane's Richard Hughes and Paul Bonney of The Australian Pink Floyd Experience.

The inquest heard evidence that the top of the stage was overloaded by about 16,000lbs and the stage set had not been assmbled correctly.

Recording a narrative conclusion, Ms Mundy said: "Inadequate advice coupled with wholly inadequate construction techniques led to the collapse of the roof system which led to Scott Johnson's death.

"It's quite clear from what I have heard that the design and construction itself had inherent deficiencies within them."
