Coronavirus: Rotherham Council elections postponed and MP in isolation

LOCAL elections have been put back a year — meaning no changes planned at Rotherham Council until May 2021.

RMBC had been set for all-out polls on May 7 in the second vote since the child sex scandal but the coronavirus outbreak has caused the delay.

Part of the Government’s intervention into the failing council was for local elections to happen only every four years.

It would also have seen the number of councillors reduced from 63 to 59, under a wards boundary shake-up.

Meanwhile, Rother Valley MP Alex Stafford is in self-isolation after having contact with someone with Covid-19.

He said: “I am asymptomatic but as a precaution I have been advised to self-isolate.

“I’m continuing to hold meetings via phone and Skype and my office continues to function to help all those in Rother Valley.

“Please do remember to wash your hands and follow the latest medical advice.”
