A CONCRETE slab that fell from Centenary bridge could have caused “serious harm” to workers from a housing and care provider.

The Advertiser received an eyewitness account that a lorry had shed its load on the bridge around 8.30am last Wednesday.

However, Mears, who are working close to the New York Stadium, said a fault with the flyover had led to the slab falling on a cabin underneath the bridge — where people work.

The incident was reported to the police and Highways Agency, Mears confirmed.

A spokesperson for Mears said: “The slab landed on our cabin but luckily no one was hurt.

"We were very lucky no one was in the cabin at the time.

“It looks like it actually came from the bridge itself — as if a piece of masonry fell from the structure.”

RMBC and South Yorkshire Police have been approached for comment without a response so far.
