Community gathers to mark Ramadan at Eastwood mosque

ABOUT 350 people took part in a ceremonial break fast as part of Ramadan at Ridge Road Mosque.

They took part in prayers in the main hall at Eastwood before sharing food — after the daily fast from sunrise to sunset — last Thursday.

Saghir Alam, chairman of Rotherham Council of Mosques, said: “The idea is built upon Islamic principles like togetherness.

“Normally, you break fast with family but on this occasion we invite people from other faiths and diverse backgrounds to meet with us.

“It’s an opportunity for people to learn about another religious practice, one which they might not have known about before.

“We had about 350 people there,” he added. “There were prayers in the main hall and then we shared food downstairs.

“It’s about reaching out and working together as Rotherham’s community. Learning about each other benefits us all.”
