It was among a record 1,797 UK green spaces to be given the prize this week.

Cllr Taiba Yasseen, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for culture, said: “We are absolutely delighted. Clifton Park is a fantastic day out and is very popular with families from across the county.”

But the sole award was down on previous years — Rotherham won five Green Flags for its parks in 2011.

Colin Taylor, parks spokesman for Rotherham Liberal Democrats, said: “It’s disappointing that only one park made the list this year. I urge the council to take the environment seriously and invest in our open spaces.”
