Church saved by firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS saved a church by preventing a blaze spreading from a nearby community building.

Crews from Rotherham and Elm Lane were called to the United Reformed Church at Bradgate at 11pm last night.

The ground floor of the Kimberworth Road building was well alight, with flames spreading to the roof and causing the floor to collapse into the basement.

Firefighters spent nearly four hours at the scene, successfully containing the blaze and preventing the neighbouring church from being affected.

A fire service spokesman said an investigation into the cause would begin today.
