Christmas lights switch-on cancelled due to wind worries

A TOWN centre Christmas lights event has been cancelled for “public safety” reasons.

Barnsley’s seasonal event was supposed to take place tonight.

The event was due to include a fireworks display, late-night shopping and an appearance from children’s TV favourites Ben and Holly from Channel 5 show The Little Kingdom.

But a Barnsley Council spokeswoman said: “The events planned for tomorrow evening’s have been cancelled in the interests of public safety.

“On the basis of the warnings issued by the Met Office, forecasting high winds and rain, we’re unable to hold the event as planned.

“Businesses will be open as usual for late night shopping.

“We’re looking at alternative dates to host a Christmas celebration in the town centre.

“We apologise for any disappointment this may cause but we have to consider people’s safety.”

Rotherham's Christmas lights event was held last Thursday. See Friday's Advertiser for a photo special from the evening.
