YOUNG businessman Chris Wright has been named Rotherham’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2009.

Chris (22) launched his own company, IT Desk, in 2006 after becoming interested in information technology while studying for his GCSEs.

His company offers small and medium-sized businesses remote IT support.

His determination to deliver top customer service helped him win the title at the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

Geoff Link, enterprise manager for Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the council's regeneration arm, said: “All our finalists were outstanding, but there's no doubt that Chris is a shining example of a young person with big ambitions but at the same time he's got common sense and a realistic approach to running a business.”

It Desk started out in one of RiDO's units at Century Business Centre, but soon outgrew that unit and is now based at Manvers house.

Chris said: “The next 12 months will be challenging and I don't expect it to be easy but I know we are well placed to push ahead and attract new customers. The award will play a vital part in this and it's a great way to end 2009.”

Another winner was Barnett & Burgin Architectural Design Ltd  based at the RiDO-run Century Business Centre, which picked up the Environmental Award.
