Children's Hospital gears up for £20m makeover

CHARITY bosses are appealing to the public to help their £40 million bid to give Sheffield Children’s hospital a 21st century shot in the arm.

The hospital’s new £20 million Make it Better appeal — which is being promoted with giant plasters on the hospital walls — aims to transform facilities at the hospital, which treats 3,000 young patients from Rotherham every year.

The appeal is aimed at raising half of the cash needed for the makeover, which will include replacing some existing wards and creating more single rooms to give families space, privacy and dignity.

Key departments will be moved closer together to ensure a smoother journey for families and a better working environment for staff.

Car parking is also being developed and there will be numerous play areas for young patients.

Sheffield Children's Hospital’s Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, will be paying for the main building programme through Government funding but the appeal is needed for the some changes, including single rooms and en-suite facilities, a special play tower, gardens, specialist medical equipment and artwork.

Supporters also include charity patrons such as Jessica Ennis and Lee Westwood and former patients, among them Ben Abbott (92), whose life was saved by the hospital 89 years ago when he was treated for diptheria. To show your support, visit www.make-it-better.org.uk.
