Child abuse gang launch appeals

SEVEN out of eight members of a child sex abuse gang jailed last month have already launched appeals.

Only ring-leader Sageer Hussain, who was found guilty of four rapes, has failed to challenge his sentence, conviction or both.

Cousins Asif Ali and Basharat Hussain are appealing their convictions and sentences, Naeem Rafiq his sentence and Mohammed Whied, Masoued Malik, Ishtiaq Khaliq and Waleed Ali their convictions.

Sheffield Crown Court heard during the gang's trial that they had subjected young girls in Rotherham to acts of a degrading and sexual nature.

They were convicted of 19 offences against three girls between them and sentenced to a total of 96 years.

Basharat launched his appeal on October 17 - the same day the gang were found unanimously guilty on all counts by a jury.
