The eight young visitors from the Tokyo took a tour around town, dropping by the Minster and sampling the delights of High Street’s independent shops.

They then put on a presentation at Rotherham College of traditional kimonos and the accompanying hairstyle.

Mika Douglas, one of the visit’s organisers, said the Japanese hairdressing students and their school principal had loved their stay in Rotherham and had been fascinated on their brief exploration of the centre.

“It is a total change for them and they are really enjoying it,” she said.

“They flew into Manchester and came straight here.”

The student group left Rotherham for a visit to London before heading home from their week-long exchange.
