'Cat meat' for sale claims investigated

REPORTS of a man offering 'cat meat' for sale are being investigated by police.

The Advertiser has been told of missing cat owners’ fears that their pets are being captured and sold as meat to takeaways.

A Herringthorpe woman, whose cat went missing in April, said she had been contacted by a man last month claiming he had information about her cat.

She said the man had told her he had come into contact with a man trying to sell cat meat and he wanted to warn owners of missing pets.

The woman said the man had also contacted another missing cat owner and given her the same story.

A police spokeswoman said it had received a report of a man allegedly offering cat meat for sale but officers had not been able to “substantiate the claim or locate the man in question”.

The spokeswoman added: “We’d encourage anyone with any concerns to report to police by calling 101 or speaking to their local neighbourhood team.”

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, we’re unable to discuss complaints about specific people and what action may have been taken.

“We understand how frustrating that is but releasing information could prejudice a future prosecution or could lead to us being fined.

“We’re so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure them we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.

“Anyone with information about animal cruelty should call the RSPCA appeals line on 0800 123 8018.”
