CARLTON Park has been closed by its new owners, staff said after a shock meeting with the long-standing Rotherham hotel’s new management.

Employees said they were summoned to a meeting this afternoon (Thursday) by DJ Hotels & Resorts, which took over last month.

One staff member said: “All staff have been called in and been told the place is shutting down today. They have brought in security to escort everybody off site.

“They’ve not given us written confirmation, no wage slips, just the last two weeks’ wages in cash. There’s just an A4 piece of paper, which doesn’t even say the company name.

“Since they took over, we’ve had no paperwork. They’ve not done PAYE. A lot of staff are very angry.

“We were told there would be a meeting at 2pm. The acting general manger just came in to tell us. Now we’re here at the hotel, being called in one by one.

“We’ve been told not to do anything but we know there are people who have weddings and funerals booked.

“They should know what’s happening. We don’t want a bride turning up to get married if she can’t.”

The hotel, a fixture in Rotherham’s leisure and tourism sector since opening in 1981, has dozens of staff.

Previous owners Red Admiral Vintage pledged to make it the flagship of its 18-hotel chain on taking the reins in late 2019. They described it as a “sleeping giant” within South Yorkshire’s economy.

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said staff had been told today the hotel was closing for good and they needed to “get off” the premises.

“They are saying it’s closing with immediate effect,” said the woman, whose relative has worked at the hotel for six years.

“They have security there kicking staff off. Once they’ve got the wages they are owed they are not giving them severance pay.”

A post on the Moorgate hotel’s Facebook page on September 25 described the takeover as “exciting news” and pledged to work through a backlog of old refunds requests and communications.

It added: “We are very excited to get started and have lots of new ideas for Carlton Park.

“Times are still very uncertain for us but any updates and announcements will be made on this page, so keep your eyes peeled!

“Thank you for your patience and we look forward to seeing you all very soon.”

The new management company has been contacted for comment.
