The 23-year-old man who died after his car left the road and hit a wall has been named as Robert David Crook, of New Meadows, Rawmarsh.
The incident happened at around 4.20am, on Tuesday, on Rotherham Road at Parkgate opposite the DFS showroom.
Two fire engines from Rotherham Station attended the incident, along with two specialist rescue pumps, two ambulances and several police cars.
No-one else was involved in the incident.
Police officers closed the road from the junction of Rotherham Road with Great Eastern Way to the roundabout at Parkgate Shopping.
The road re-opened at around 7.40am.
