Cannabis farms to be subject of MP’s public meeting

MP SARAH Champion will hold a public meeting to discuss the “blight” of cannabis farms on her patch.

The online meeting follows a series of raids in Eastwood and a series of power cuts power officials linked to illegal use of their network.

At least five properties in the Eastwood area have been raided in the past two months, including one incident where two homes had been knocked through to allow more growing space, and South Yorkshire Police would not confirm if a house raided two weeks ago was the location of yet another drug cultivation site.

During the meeting, Sarah will be joined by representatives of the police and Rotherham Council.

Those attending will hear about efforts to  address the problem and have the opportunity to raise their concerns and to ask questions.

Ms Champion said: “Illegal cannabis farms are a blight on our communities, linked both to organised crime and modern-day slavery.

“They also cause huge disruption for residents and businesses, particularly as a result of damage to the power grid.

“For some time, I have been concerned that not only is the problem failing to be effectively addressed, but that it seems to be spreading.

“There is no reason why residents should have to put up with these criminal operations in their communities and it is vital that the council and the police work together to put them out of action and to bring offenders to justice.”

The event would be a chance to highlight problems and hopefully get answers, the MP said.

“It is really important that officials understand the real-life impact that these criminals have and that they have clear and effective plans to shut them down permanently.

“I hope that as many people as possible will be able to attend and to make their views clear.”

The event will be held next Thursday between 6pm and 7pm.

To attend, email Jacquie Falvey at by 5pm on Tuesday, January 25, to register an interest and receive information on how to join.
