Canklow couple "petrified" after van torched

AN ARSON attack has left a couple “petrified” after their van was set alight in the early hours of the morning – causing £1,000 worth of damage.

Richard Pearson (37), of West Bawtry Road, Canklow, awoke to find a neighbour throwing water onto his Vauxhall Combo vehicle at about 1am on Sunday (May 20).

Mr Pearson said the vehicle contained work tools belonging to his employer, Yorkshire Engine Carbon Cleaning of Rotherham, which is run by his girlfriend Rachel Lee.

He said: “It was a neighbour banging on the door that alerted me. I opened the window and he was stood there with buckets of water.

“My missus is absolutely petrified now. We have even put a metal plate over the letterbox to stop anything happening again.”

He said the van had been badly damaged with a £1,000 repair bill, but the equipment inside survived the blaze

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “An investigation has been launched after a vehicle was set alight in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“At this time, the incident is being treated as suspicious and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 64 of May 20.”
