Paula Gill (49), of The Brecks, was chosen from thousands of proud glasses-wearers as a regional finalist for Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year contest.

She scooped a bottle of champagne and a £125 Specsavers voucher — but could bag up to £10,000 if she tops the UK-wide poll.

Paula is regularly seen busking in the streets of Sheffield and Bakewell, as well as playing pubs and bars.

She has worn specs for ten years and enjoys experimenting with quirky new styles.

Paula said: “I was thrilled to hear I’d been named as a regional finalist.

“Being in the running for a £10,000 prize is really exciting — it would help me invest in my music career and I’d love to take a holiday to Nashville to soak up the history and culture of country and Americana music that I love to perform.”

Claire Wardingley, from Specsavers on College Street, said: “It was a pleasure to have Paula in store and we’re so proud that someone from Rotherham has made it this far in the competition.

“We really think Paula could go all the way and take the grand prize as a very deserving winner.

“We’ll be cheering her on over the next few weeks.”

The awards were launched by Steps star and specs-lover Claire Richards, the optician’s eyewear ambassador.

If Paula triumphs in her age category, she will meet Claire and rub shoulders with other celebrities at a London awards ceremony next month.

All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs-wearing.
