Business as usual after fire at Masbrough recycling plant

A RECYCLING plant is back up and running after a fire in a waste container destroyed more than 40 tonnes of waste — but the cause remains a mystery.

Firefighters were called to KCM Recyling on Ginhouse Lane, Masbrough, just after midnight yesterday (Sunday) and tackled the blaze for about seven hours, a spokesman for the fire and rescue service said.

Crews from Rotherham, Elm Lane, Dearne, Parkway and Central stations worked until about 7am to extinguish the fire, which consumed around 40 to 50 tonnes of recycling materials.

Mr Charles Hickling, a director at the recycling firm, said: “We don’t know how it started.

“We looked on our camera and we don’t know whether it was the waste that came in that day or someone got in.

“Our security went round there and ten minutes later it was on fire.”

Mr Hickling said the plant had not been due to open on Sunday but staff were there to clean up the mess.

He said the site opened up as normal this morning (Monday).

The fire service spokesman said the cause had been recorded as accidental.
