Burglary initiative rolled out to Mexborough and Edlington

A SUCCESSFUL burglary initiative is being rolled out by police — and residents in Mexborough and Edlington are encouraged to sign up.

Operation Shield aims to tackle break-ins by forensically marking valuables and property with Smartwater, an invisible liquid with a code registered to individuals.

Areas already in Sheffield and Doncaster covered by the scheme have seen a 24 per cent reduction in burglary.

Det Chief Insp Lee Berry said: “We are committed to protecting homes in our communities and deterring thieves from entering properties.

“I would urge anyone in the areas mentioned to sign up, it takes no more than 30 minutes for our officers to complete their visit and it is completely free.

“By working together and building stronger communities, we can ensure homes are kept safe and offenders are more likely to be caught and prosecuted.”
