British Legion appeal for new members

A VETERANS’ group is marking its centenary by appealing for new members and anyone is welcome.

The Dinnington branch of the Royal British Legion is just one of three in South Yorkshire to have been going since 1921.

Chairman Bill Loftus said he wanted to use the landmark to help drum up more members.

“You don’t have to be a veteran to join it is open to anyone over the age of 18,” he said.

“You don’t have to have any connection to the armed forces, just a common aim to help people.

“More than anything, people join for comradeship.

“They can become a community worker and help us raise funds for the Legion.

“We organise the remembrance parade in Dinnington and the festival of remembrance at the Lyric on behalf of the council. “At our monthly meetings, we talk about what’s going on at the Legion and any cases we are looking into.

“After that, we have a social event with a beer and pie and peas.”

Bill said besides providing comradeship and fighting loneliness, the Legion performed a vital outreach role and was able to aid veterans in a range of ways.

“We help veterans with any problems they have,” he said.

“If they have any welfare issues, we will do what we can.

“It could be they have no money or food, and we can help with that.

“If they need psychological help, we can put them on to the correct people.

“For many veterans, once they are out of the service, they are forgotten, but we are here for anyone who has served, even if only for one day, and for their families.

“We don’t know how many are in the area there may be thousands, but they are often so proud they don’t ask for help.

“We aim to offer support to all serving personnel, veterans and their families.

“Every member contributes to this aim and every contribution is greatly appreciated and valued.”

The Dinnington branch meets monthly at The Lyric, on Laughton Road, Dinnington, at 7pm on the last Wednesday of each month, with their next meeting falling next Wednesday.
