Bridge repairs after smash

CENTENARY Way remained closed today for work to make the road safe after a collision which demolished a metal barrier and caused traffic chaos in the town centre.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene at around 12.40pm yesterday after a Nissan sports car left the road and hit the safety barrier where it crosses over the railway line outside the New York Stadium, destroying a small section of the railing.

A police spokeswoman said that cars travelling over the bridge would be at risk of falling on to the tracks and that the road would remain closed until it could be made safe with either a temporary or permanent repair.
