BREAKING:Written warning for detective who failed to investigate teenager's rape claims

A DETECTIVE who failed to follow up a teenager’s complaints of rape and sexual abuse has been given a final written warning.

Det Con Ian Hampshire admitted gross misconduct at a South Yorkshire Police misconduct hearing for failing to properly investigate complaints of child sexual exploitation when he was working for the force as a trainee detective in Maltby in 2007.

The officer, who admitted four allegations, failed to properly investigate multiple allegations of rape and sexual assaults.

Mr Simon Mallett, who chaired the misconduct hearing, said the officer’s failings had contributed to the those of the force’s public protection unit at the time.

“His supervisors bear considerably more responsibility for its overall failings,” he said.

“It would be wrong for this panel, and for this officer, to make him personally accountable for the systemic failings of the force in 2007.”

The three-member panel concluded today (Tuesday) that Det Cons Hampshire, who has worked for the force since 1998, should be given a final written warning.
