Eight foot-high iron gates were partially forced open and a 4x4 vehicle appears to have been used, said a spokesperson from the South Yorkshire Police's off road team.

They added: "The target seems to had been a female horse (pictured), who suffered horrific injuries.

"A second gate had the fencing slats damaged, bent down and the suspects tried to steal the horse by dragging her through the damaged slats.

"The horse managed to get away and was found on Wath golf course."

Officers believe the suspects may attempt to try such an act again after being unsuccessful.
