“It is believed the unknown offenders smashed a window to gain entry to the library,” said a spokeswoman.

“Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing.”

The Herringthorpe Valley Road library and neighbourhood hub was forced to close on Monday morning but reopened in the afternoon.

A Rotherham Council spokeswoman said nothing had been stolen, adding: “The Library will continue to host its regular activities and we look forward to welcoming residents again.”
