Boy (11) breaks leg after being hit by runaway car

AN 11-year-old boy was hospitalised with a broken leg after being hit by a runaway car in Goldthorpe yesterday evening.

The silver Vauxhall Astra rolled down Fredrick Street, Goldthorpe without a driver at the wheel at around 5pm and collided with the boy, police said.

The boy was taken to hospital where he currently remains with a broken leg.

A police spokeswoman said the owner of the car, Asa Colin Townend (45), of Probert Avenue, Goldthorpe, reportedly arrived back at the car and drove off before emergency services arrived.

He has been reported on summons for various driving offences in connection with the incident and is due to appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Police want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw what happened.

Call police on 101, quoting incident number 789 of September 4.
