The Millers leapfrogged MK Dons to reclaim an automatic-promotion spot by ending a run of three straight losses with a 1-0 triumph over Ipswich Town at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Following Michael Smith's late winner, Warne said: "Everyone can be really proud of the performance. It does feel massive.”

“The fans were brilliant which makes a massive difference to the players.

“First half we were edgy and we didn't make it difficult enough for a very good team. We were very good second half. It was the result we needed and the performance we needed too.

“Some of our key players have had a dip in form. All our players have to be at their best for us to get results. The players are really chuffed."

Rotherham are level on points with MK, who are at home to Sheffield Wednesday tonight, and have a better goal difference than their rivals.

Striker Smith, who claimed three Player-of-the-Year prizes at the club's awards dinner two days before today's clash, struck in the 77th minute, sweetly guiding a shot into the far corner.

Warne said: “His performance was right up there. Maybe having the end-of-season do on Thursday, where he won everything and everyone told him how great he was, gave him a boost."

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said: “In the first half we gave Rotherham all sorts of problems and had the clearest chance in the whole game.

“I think they were glad to get in at half-time 0-0. They turned it into a game of set-plays and it was a barrage of corners and throw-ins."
