Bomb disposal squad carry out controlled explosion at Rotherham park

BOMB disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion at a Rotherham park after being called in to destroy grenades police said were being "illegally kept".

A small blast was seen at Valley Park, off Valley Road in Herringthorpe, as the explosive devices were made safe yesterday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said: “Safety tests carried out in Germany revealed that dummy rifle grenades manufactured in that country still had potential to pose a danger.

“A business owner in Rotherham had legitimately bought some in 2019 for use in the training of contractors working in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

“EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) attended and took possession of the items, which were destroyed in a nearby safe space.”
