Bogus official caller claiming to be from fraud squad

VICTIMS of a bogus official caller are being urged to come forward after a series of incidents.

Police said a man who claims to work for the fraud squad at New Scotland Yard has called the victims and led them to believe that he is carrying out an investigation into their bank.

“In each case, this has resulted in bank details being given over the phone or the cash being collected,” said a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman.

Det Sgt Laura Procter said: “We’re appealing for anyone who believes they may have been targeted to come forward so we can build a clear picture of the offending and bring those responsible to justice.

“This can have a detrimental effect on the victims who are often elderly and feel embarrassed to speak out.

“We know that fraudsters often share information so if you are aware of an elderly relative who is receiving lots of unsolicited calls or post, please do speak to them about this to ensure they receive the support they need.”

Anyone with information or who believes they may have been affected is asked to call 101 quoting incident 586 of 24/08/18.
