Bluebell Wood kids see police dogs in action

SOUTH Yorkshire Police organised a day to remember for Bluebell Wood youngsters and their families when they got chance to meet the force’s newest canine recruits.

More than 50 children from the North Anston hospice and Barnsley bereavement group Starlight at the Dog Training Centre on Niagara Way, Sheffield.

They watched as the animals took part in training exercises to find drugs and explosives. General patrol dogs were put through their paces in agility and criminal work.

And there was an extra surprise for the children as the police helicopter came in to land en route to its Sheffield base.

Lynne Barnett, Bluebell Wood sibling and family support worker, said after the July 28 fun day: “The children, carers and parents from both Bluebell Wood and the Starlight Group had a great time.

“It was a truly memorable day helping out with the police dog training and talking to the police officers and staff.

“Days out like this really do improve the children’s quality of life and we are thankful for South Yorkshire Police for letting us get involved.”

Supporting the day were PCSOs from Tinsley, Darnall and Attercliffe and Rother Valley South Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The dog training centre’s connection with the hospice started in April 2009 when two newly-born labrador pups were named Blue and Belle.

They are currently being cared for by police volunteers until old enough to start their initial training.
