Blitz on off-roaders after damage at nature reserve

POLICE have launched a clampdown on illegal off-roading at a Rotherham nature reserve.

Bikers and 4x4 drivers have caused  “extensive environmental damage” to the RSPB Old Moor Wetland Centre at Manvers, say police.

The Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out a three-day operation, with the Road Policing Group and the Mounted Section, to tackle the problem .  . and they have pledged to continue the operation.

Motorcyclists removed boundary fences, destroyed new trees and removed mature trees to create tracks within the reserve.

Riverbanks and vegetation have also been damaged by riders driving through the River Dearne.

There are also fears that otters living in the water have been disturbed, which nature  could force them away from the area for good.

They carried out high-visibility patrols, seized seven motorbikes and handed out 12 warnings about future conduct.

Police Community Support Officers Shaun McDermott said: “These selfish riders show no concern for the nature and wildlife of the area and are ruining it for everyone else just for their amusement.

“This is an on-going issue which will see Dearne SNT's continued attention and efforts for the foreseeable future.”
