Blitz on bogus callers

POLICE in Rotherham have teamed up with traffic officers and trading standards chiefs for a week-long blitz on targeting distraction burglars and rogue traders, with the message: "If you're not sure, don't open the door "Operation Mask2 started o

Distraction burglars use a variety of techniques to trick their way into someone’s home in order to steal and have been known to pose as bogus officials, particularly from the water board or local authority.

In three of the last four years, distraction burglaries have increased in South Yorkshire throughout November before a drop in the run up to Christmas, so police have earmarked the month as a key time for action.

Operations by detectives and traffic officers have helped to bring about an overall 16 per cent cut in distraction burglaries over the past year.

Det Chief Insp Terry Mann, who is leading the operation, said: "People across South Yorkshire need to remain vigilant against those who aim to trick their way into your property to commit crime or con you out of your money. If you're not sure, don't open the door.

"If someone calls at your door and claims to represent a company or organisation then ask to see their identity and check with the company to confirm their identity before allowing them to enter.

"Most legitimate organisations will set up appointments rather than 'cold-calling' at your house."

Part of this week's operation will traffic officers checking 'white vans' to increase intelligence about rogue traders.

Police are asking legitimate traders to provide information and look out for "rip-off merchants" who give their profession a bad name.

Det Chief Insp Mann said: "If you need some work doing to your property, don't just go with the first company or trader you speak to.

"Try to obtain a number of quotes to see if the prices match up and where possible, ask family or friends for a recommendation."

Unlike distraction burglaries, there is no specific rogue trader offence but since the beginning of April this year, South Yorkshire Police has classed 67 incidents as rogue trader-related.

"Police and trading standards ask the public to remain vigilant on behalf of the elderly and vulnerable," Det Chief Insp Mann added.

"Look out for any strange vehicles outside your homes. Don't just limit this to old cars or vans, as bogus official offenders try to blend into the role by using new and professional looking cars. Two or three people in such vehicles may be a reason to pay particular attention."
