Bed designer in court over baby's choking death

THE OWNER of a company which made the bed in which a baby died has gone on trial accussed of gross negligence manslaughter.

Craig Williams, of Park View Road, Kimberworth, appeared at Leeds Crown Court yesterday over the death of seven-month-old Oscar Abbey in York in November 2016.

Williams, the then-owner of Sheffield-based Playtime Beds, denies manslaughter and fraud.

The court heard little Oscar died after choking and that the bed had been “designed and constructed without any care or thought for the safety of the child who was sleeping in it”.

As well as owning Playtime, Williams was also its bed designer, the jury heard.

The fraud relates to the company continuing to trade after Oscar's death.

Williams reportedly falsely claimed his beds complied with British Standards and had "no knowledge what had happened to a company called Playtime Beds."

The trial continues.
