POLICE are handing out hundreds of security kits to help homeowners beat summer sneak-in burglaries.

Officers and cadets are increasing awareness at the time of year when the sunny weather usually sees the statistics soar.

Rotherham North Safer Neighbourhood Team were joined by police cadets in Kimberworth to give away SmartWater kits and UV markers.

Sgt Dave Baines said: “SmartWater is an invisible liquid with a unique chemical code, which once registered, is linked to the owner’s personal details.

“It is used to mark personal possessions, such as televisions, computers or garden furniture and equipment.

“If these items are stolen and recovered by police, they can be returned to their rightful owners.”

Officers suggest the following crime prevention tips in order to reduce the risk of becoming a sneak-in burglary victim:

  • Keep doors and windows locked and valuables out of sight. Fit restrictors on windows to prevent them opening fully.
  • Do not leave keys in locks or within grabbing distance through letter-boxes or windows.
  • Keep vehicles and garage doors locked.
  • Use security marking tools or register belongings at Immobilise.com.

Insp Abdul Aziz said: “We know from experience that when the weather improves, the opportunist thieves will target homes and properties that are left insecure with open windows or unlocked doors.

“We will do everything we can to catch and prosecute criminals who take advantage of homeowners in this way.

“But we need residents to help fight against this type of crime, both in the home and out in their gardens.
