Barclays to close Rotherham branch

YET another Rotherham bank is being axed after a reported fall in customer visits.

Barclays is shutting its branch at Stag Roundabout on November 27.

The bank, which said all the Stag staff would move to other branches, blamed more people switching to online and promised to help customers do their banking in other ways.

A spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking.

“As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

“This is reflected at the Stag Roundabout branch where there has been a 17 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020.

“In addition, over four fifths of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

“We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.”

After the closure, the nearest Barclays branch to Stag will be at Bridgegate in  Rotherham town centre.

Barclays said 81 customers regularly used the branch exclusively for  banking.

Other options including a mobile app, phone, online and video banking was available and “everyday transactions” could can be completed at post offices instead.

Customers will be directly informed of the Stag branch closure and can take part in “tea and teach” sessions to explore digital banking, the firm said.
